Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is the daughter of British lawyers Jacqueline Luesby (born in Paris) as well as Chris Watson (born in Paris). After moving to Oxfordshire when she was five, Emma enrolled at the Dragon School. When she was six years old, Emma realized she would like to be an actor and for several years, she studied at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts a part-time theater school, where she learned singing dancing and acting. As early as age ten, she took part as the lead in a number of Stagecoach School plays and productions. The casting process began in 1999 to cast Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the movie adaptation of British writer J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was identified by casting agents via Emma's Oxford theatre instructor. David Heyman announced to Emma that after eight consecutive auditions they and Rupert Grint were chosen as Hermione and Harry Potter. The release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) was Emma's first cinematic screen appearance. The movie beat all previous records for opening day and weekend numbers, and was the highest-grossing film of 2001. Film critics praised the film as well as the performance of three leading actors of the young generation. The Daily Telegraph praised Emma for her outstanding performance.
